After a lot of playing with ideas, here's what I came up with...
Why yes, I did look through all my patterned paper, and just couldn't find anything that worked the way I wanted it to -- so I made my own with some Smooch Spritz. I used Distress markers for the first time to watercolour this sweet cat -- I think I like them. A lot. :) The dark purple really seems to make him pop on the split background.
