Seize the Birthday: Focal Point Sentiments

Welcome to a new Seize the Birthday challenge! For our newest *topping*, we are suggesting you create a card with the sentiment as the focal image. Of course you know that we like to see any newly created birthday card in our link-up, so our topping is optional.
I have some great, fill-the-card Christmas sentiment stamps, but not as much in the way of sizeable birthday sentiments. Luckily, I had a choice of dies that would give me a focal sentiment. Here's my card:

This die cut sentiment from My Favorite Things certainly fills a card nicely! I can sense a few of you thinking, but it would also make a terrific shaker card! I just wasn't ready to make my one annual shaker card yet this year. :D Instead I found some patterned paper to go with the blue I'd chosen for my main panel. I'm not sure I love this cake as a centre image - not thrilled that the candles/sparklers are black. To help offset that, I added some yellow "glow" behind each sparkler, then dabbed a little Stickles in the centre of each. Also, at some point in my colouring, I decided the cake also looked like a hat. And so now of course I'm having trouble unseeing it that way. I stuck it on some foam tape in the middle anyway. I think this is CAS enough to enter in the current Addicted to CAS challenge, where the code word is CAKE. And of course, there's the Simon Says Stamp Anything Goes Wednesday challenge.

Our surprise party guest Joyce is with us for one last challenge post - she and the design team have lots of fun takes on the challenge theme. Make a birthday card and join us!

  1. Now I'm seeing a hat too, Lindsey, ;) but I know it's a cake and the colors match that fantastic striped paper. Thanks for sharing your card with us at Addicted to CAS.

  2. Love the choice of striped patterned paper behind the diecut. I think it really helps to make the baby blue "pop". I didn't see a hat ... until you mentioned it LOL! Great CAS card. Thanks for joining us at Addicted to CAS.

  3. I saw the hat too - but I could un-see it immediately, because I loved that little cake image so much! I think its just the perfect thing to put in the center! I would have been super tempted to turn it into a shaker card, but I am so glad you used the pattern paper instead, and let it be. Love this creation, Lindsey!

  4. My daughter thought your cake was a cup of coffee, maybe she needs a refill. Fantastic CAS card, super die cut, it's perfect for the theme. The patterned paper was a good idea but yes it would make a perfect shaker.

  6. I am amazed at how you placed the design paper behind the die-cut sentiment. It looks wonderful and I must remember to do this technique. I think that this design could be massed produced easily.

  9. I knew I'd be inspired with a catch-up wander and I certainly am! I 'think' I may have that MFT die (or something similar). Need to go on a search! I hear you in not wanting to rush the annual shaker; doing so too soon may spur you on to create more *grin* Your card is fun; love the patterned background; sweet tooth tingling over the cake or hat-cake, if you prefer!

  13. You make an annual shaker card? That's more frequent than me! And now I'm seeing the hat (looks suspiciously like the birthday-cake-hat at the local Italian restaurant!). Either way, it's a fab card!

  14. I think annually is about as often as I make a shaker card but you're right - this would be perfect for that. I love this die and how you pulled the card together. The bright background paper is awesome.
